Exercise-1

Why does the poet compare a mother’s hands to a rainbow?

The second stanza describes the work of a mother.
Line 4: unresting: always working

The poet artfully gives a beautiful comparison of mother’s hands to a rainbow. The reason behind is that after a rainstorm, a colourful rainbow makes it’s appearance on the sky showing a ray of hope that yes storm is over and all is set again. Same is the case of a mother that she suffers all the odds, troubles, difficulties and hard times just for her children. She does not want her children to face any problem or worry in their lives. In reality, a mother acts like a powerful shield that is always ready to provide maximum protection to her children.

Exercise-2

Q.2) Describe the role of a mother as brought out in this stanza.

The third stanza is addressed to mothers
Line 2: natal sod: land of one’s birth.
Line 5: trophies: a shield or cup given as a prize for some great achievement, sometimes decorated with pearls.

Answer:
The role of a mother is of vital importance. She not only gives birth to her children but spends all her life in the bringing up of her children. That is the reason why it is said that “Heaven lies at the feet of the mother.” It is the training of a mother that turns an infant into a good or bad adult. Whatever a mother teaches to her children has significance throughout the lifetime of her children. She is the only one who suffers all the pains and troubles and sacrifices all her comforts and happiness just for the sake of her children. We should respect our mothers as they are not only our mothers but our teachers, friends, and well-wishers too.

Exercise-3

Q.1) Explain how the poet gives credit for all the great achievements of people to their mothers.

The fourth stanza quotes, in the first line, a prayer said by all mankind in honor of
Lines 3 and 4: mingled with the worship in the sky: the prayer said on earth is also said by the angels and saints in heaven.
Line 5 and 6: where no tempest darkens, Rainbows evermore are hurled: in heaven, there will be no more sufferings. It will be like the relief we feel after a storm.

Answer:
The poet gives the credit for all the great achievements of people to their mothers as they are the first ones to guide and train their children. In Islam, it is the concept that the first school of any child is the lap of a mother. If a mother is educated, well mannered, and civilized definitely she would bring up her children in the same way. On the other hand, if a mother is not well educated or does not know the manners of living a cultured life, how she would be able to teach her children mannerism and civility? Therefore, it is a must that if nations want civilized people they should provide civilized mothers to the people.

Exercise-4

Why does the poet say that the prayer for mothers on earth mingles with that said in heaven?

The poet says that the prayer for mothers on earth mingles with that said in Heaven as it is the same prayer that angels are busy in saying up above the sky. It is a ritual for almost every mother to start her dua with her children’s welfare, betterment, health and success. In return, it is the duty of all the children to pray for their mothers. If we pray for our mothers with utmost sincerity and honesty, there is a possibility that God may forgive all the sins or wrongs done by our mothers intentionally or unintentionally in this world.
